A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.

There should be a support group for Type As.
Growing up I had a plan for everything. I predefined success. I needed a respected intellectual job. A scientist. An engineer. It had to have a good paycheck too, of course. How else to function in consumerist society?
But things didn’t play out according to my bullet-pointed plan. I went to school to be an engineer. But strangely, when I got there, found out I didn’t like engineering. And this was something I didn’t know how to reconcile. I was SUPPOSED to be an engineer. And I kept taking classes, thinking if I just got through this next one, I’d get to the point where I’d be interested in what I was doing. But that point never came.
It took too long for me to realize that planning wasn’t enough to achieve success. When I did, I switched majors and found success in school and in the real world. And that lesson has hit home again.
Last week, I was laid off.
You can imagine how a Type A like myself takes that kind of setback.
But if there’s one thing that I learned the last time around, it’s that sometimes, the world is telling you something. This blog is my attempt to follow my new path, whatever it may be. And as I go, share with all of you some thoughts and resources in case you find yourself in my shoes.
Enjoy the trip.
