Interview Question of the Week: What do you know about this organization?

Short and simple this week, folks.  You need to prepare.  Period.

The most common response I hear to this question: “Just what I saw on your web site.”

This is not specific or relevant.  It does not show interest in the company or the opportunity.  Honestly, it comes across as lazy.  Assume someone will ask you this question, and have a short reply ready.  Your goal is to do one of two things: start an interesting conversation or indicate why you think you’re right for the company.

Where to find information about the company in question:

  • Their website. No, I am not contradicting myself.  Use their website, but dig a little deeper.  Notice something interesting.  Read a press release or their annual report.  If they have a careers section, notice the language they use about who they are as an organization
  • Google. The company mouthpiece isn’t the only source for information.  Use Google to find news articles, press releases, product reviews, stock information.  Try to pick up cues on strategy or philosophy that are pertinent to the discussion.
  • Hoovers. Hoovers is a database of corporate information.  Although it requires a paid subscription, many public libraries provide access for free.  You can find information on key players, competitors and more that give you a perspective on the company and the industry.
  • People on the inside. Perhaps your best source of both information and a connection to the decision maker, anyone that you know working for the company can provide a wealth of information.  Keep in mind that many interviewers won’t respond well to you parroting what should be privileged info, so ask around then verify independently.

Some sample responses:

Well, I know that you’re the top producer of widgets in the Northeast with a plan to grow into the Midwest.  That’s part of the reason I was excited about this opportunity — I could see my Midwest contacts being very helpful in supporting your growth strategy.

I know that you have a reputation for innovative solutions for your clients.  In fact, I saw that you just announced Product X will hit the market in April.  How has your group been supporting that effort?

Either of these show some level of analysis and interest in the company’s strategy and operations.  Both put you ahead of most candidates that walk through the door.

The Interview Question of the Week series is designed to help you set yourself apart when it comes to a job interview.  Follow along and set aside a few minutes each week to formulate answers to these key questions, and you’re bound to outclass the competition. I agree that this is such an important question. When interviewing candidates, I feel that so few actually prepare for this question. The sample responses are what employers are looking for. Show me that you have taken the time and effort to research our organization. I want to see that the applicant and the organization are both “choosing each other” without finding out more about the organization, the applicant is saying, I am just looking to be employed – and not looking for a career and sound cultural match.

Sheree: Love that concept — choosing each other. Thanks for your thoughts… Always good to hear from a seasoned HR pro like yourself. :)
