In honor of those of you who are coming to the end of your college education and getting ready to enter the world, I bring you a new grad interview question: how did you choose your major?
New graduates face slightly different interviews than established professionals, but that doesn’t mean they can take the process less seriously. While an interviewer understands that entry-level candidates don’t have much job experience, he will still want to know who you are, what you’ve done, and what your aspirations are.
Some interviewers will ask candidates, “Why do you want to work here?”
But candidates are ready for that question. This is why asking about choice of major is so effective. Suddenly the candidate is just making conversation, taking the recruiter through their thought process. Some candidates confess that they heard the field was good money, some say they’re not sure, some have even admitted they didn’t have the GPA to get into their first-choice program. None of these tells a recruiter why they should be hired.
And really, this is a question that you should answer for yourself before you start interviewing. Why did you choose your major? What are your goals for your education? How does that affect how you interview for a potential position?
Show the recruiter you’ve thought this through and are interested in their company because it meets your career goals. You’ll be ahead of the game.
