Do you pay it forward? Mentoring and management

Yesterday while buzzing around the house getting some chores done I popped in the latest movie in my Netflix queue, Pay it Forward.

If you’re not familiar with the film, a teacher asks his seventh grade students to develop a project that will change the world, and one student decides to “pay it forward” — do three big favors for three people, and ask each of them to do the same.

It got me thinking about how much I’ve benefited from others’ help.  From supervisors who have taken a chance and allowed me to do work that would stretch my skill sets, to those who have provided me with their advice and insight, to people who have simply contributed an encouraging word when I needed it.

My guess is most of us have people in our lives who have directly impacted our success, both personal and professional.

If you’re in a management position, are you paying it forward?  Are you using the lessons that you’ve learned from those who came before you and helping others to understand them?  Have you done justice to the efforts of your mentors, supervisors, and colleagues who invested in your success by investing in success for others?

If not, what’s stopping you?

Who made the biggest impact on your professional success?  How?
