So, strategic job seeker that you are, you’re working on applying for a great job the right way — by connecting with the hiring manager directly. You’ve tried calling the office and asking for the hiring manager, but haven’t gotten a response or you’ve gotten the brush off. What next?
Tip 2 on finding the hiring manager: Call after hours
The person answering the phone from 9-5 is probably well-trained on how to respond to inquiries. But what happens after the office closes? Some possibilities:
- You get automated voice mail. Sometimes it sends you to a general mailbox, but sometimes you get a menu that might give you some clues. If you can get directed to the appropriate department, you may get a directory of names, or some other information that will lead you in the right direction.
- You get a less-trained person. Maybe someone picks up the phone after hours, and that person is more oriented towards service than gatekeeping. They may give you the information that you need.
