Everyone wants to get their foot in the door at the company of their dreams, but most people don’t quite know how.  Today, we’ll look at another option for finding the hiring manager for a job opportunity that you’ve located.

Check the professional organizations

Most professionals are members of one or more professional organizations related to their field.  If you’re doing some directed networking, you probably do too.

So, start with organizations that you’re a member of.  Check the organization’s website to see if there’s a directory of members.  Often, you’ll be able to search by company and potentially even title (or part of a title, like Director or V.P.).  This search may turn up the hiring manager, and at the very least should turn up good target people within an organization.

If you don’t find anything there, consider organizations that you are not a member of.  You don’t necessarily have to run out and join to get the information you need — try contacting others within your network to see if they’re members and have access to a directory, and enlist them in your search by asking them to help with research.  A couple of searches can be quick to complete, and it’s a nice, concrete way for people to help you to advance.
