The #1 strategy to get your resume read

hiringprocessThis is the simplified diagram of the hiring process that we used as part of our discussion yesterday on Writing Resumes that Get Read. As the focus was on effective resume writing, the premise of the slide is that you don’t have an “in” at the company, and your resume is doing the work of getting you an interview. In the traditional resume-submission scenario, your span of control leaves off where you turn in the resume and picks up again if someone calls you for an interview.

Effective resume writing can carry you through the black box, giving the database, recruiter, and hiring manager what they need in order to easily identify you as a great fit for the job. But this is not the most important thing.

By networking into your target companies, you can have influence in the black box.

If all you’re doing is submitting a resume, you have to rely on the strength of the resume to carry you through the process. By creating relationships, you can augment your case with your sparkling personality, professionalism and persistence.

By all means, have a resume that can do the job. But if you can avoid it, don’t leave your resume to navigate the black box alone.
