Inevitably, the night before a blog post is due to publish–that means most nights–after everyone else is in bed, I sit down with my laptop and a Diet Coke to write.
Sometimes the words flow easily. Other times, like this time, I spend a lot of time searching for where to begin.
Writing isn’t a rote activity. It requires creativity and high-level thought. And work like that takes a special kind of energy–an energy that’s not in infinite supply.
If you’re in job search, you may run into the same issue. Some days, it’s easy to charge ahead. Others you spend studying the wallpaper or rearranging your pens.
Here are a few things you can do on those low-energy days that will still get you closer to where you want to be:
- Update your records. Make sure any job search tracking that you’re doing — applications, networking, follow ups — is up to date. This will help get you organized for your next high-energy burst of activity.
- Divert yourself. Sometimes, recharging yourself mentally is the best thing that you can do. Spend some time outside, exercise, play some golf, pinball, whatever moves you. Give your brain a break.
- Update your online profiles. Channel your internet surfing for good. As long as you’re going to spend time browsing, use it to polish up your presence on LinkedIn, VisualCV, Facebook, wherever you hang your digital hat.
- Call some old friends. Who haven’t you talked to in a while? Chat, laugh, reminisce. Bonus: it’s technically networking.
Don’t push yourself too hard. Everyone needs a mental health day every now and again. Take one, embrace it, and get back at the search tomorrow.
