What did you want to be when you were five years old?
Maybe it was a firefighter, or a veterinarian, or President.
At that age, we see everything as a possibility. But truthfully, our view of the future is probably a bit fuzzy.
Even when we get older, when we have a stronger vision of our direction, when we understand our values and strengths, we still miss the mark. What did you think you’d be doing with your career? How close are you?
The thing we’re least likely to see are the bumps in the road. And while those setbacks may be unforeseen, they often provide us with opportunities we wouldn’t have anticipated.
More than one person I know has been able to spend time with ailing relatives, reconnect with their kids, start their own business, or simply take time to fully evaluate their next career step while they were out of work. More than one person I know, when on the other side of things, has found themselves grateful for a layoff. For them, that’s probably the biggest surprise of all.
What has been a surprise to you in your career? What has it meant for you?
