How NOT to win that job promotion

by Kristi on October 26

What's all the fuss about?Today’s post is a guest post from Andrew Rondeau. His blog, Great Management, is a great source of information and inspiration for professionals.

Believe it or not, but not everyone wants a great successful career. Not everyone wants to get a promotion and earn more money.

So follow these guidelines and I guarantee you will NOT be promoted.

1. Put NO pride in what you do.

People who don’t want promotion are those that have no sense of pride in their work. They have little enthusiasm and desire to do their best.

2. DON’T improve your skills.

Having no pride and no passion is only part of how NOT to get promoted. You must also back it up by NOT wanting to improve your own skills or knowledge.

3. See challenges as BIG problems.

Another obvious tip on how NOT to get promoted is to see any new challenge as a big problem. Look at it as another job you have to do on top of everything else and you will not be put up for promotion. In fact, even better, complain to your boss about all the work you’ve got.

4. Do LESS Than Necessary

If you want to know how NOT to get promoted, do less than what is asked of you. That means not volunteering for work and taking the initiative to make a job better. It also means sitting around waiting for work to come to you. Bosses HATE people who can’t help them solve problems – so don’t help them, especially if the problem is yours.

5. PROCRASTINATE

Show signs of not starting things and being lazy. That’s a sure way NOT to get promoted.

6. Turn up LATE for meetings (or not at all).

For each meeting you attend, turn up at least 10 minutes late or even better would be not to turn up at all. If you do turn up, just sit there texting and not contributing. That will really annoy everyone and you will not be promoted.

7. NEVER keep your promises.

Promise someone, either a customer or work colleague or your boss, that you’ll have something complete by a certain time/date. Then don’t deliver on your promise. That works a real treat in your effort not to get promoted. In fact, I suggest you make this a habit i.e. do it all the time.

8. WATCH the clock.

If you are meant to arrive by 9am each morning, don’t arrive any earlier that 9.15am. If you are meant to leave work at 5pm, leave at 4.45pm and shout “goodbye” to everyone so people can see you are leaving early.

9. DRESS scruffily and look unkempt.

Wear jeans with holes in and t-shirts with rude slogans on. Also don’t wear deodorant every day and only wash your hair once a week. By looking like this, you don’t look the part. You don’t look successful or look like someone the bosses want to promote – so you won’t be!

10. GOSSIP.

Talk about your work colleagues and bosses behind their backs. Make up some lies about a work colleague you don’t like and start spreading it around. Your bosses will think you are untrustworthy and won’t promote you.

11. Spend all day on the INTERNET.

Spend at least 4 hours every day on the internet. Check your personal emails, update your Facebook account and send out Tweets at least every 30minutes.

So there we are! Follow these 11 tips and you’ll never get promoted, I guarantee it.

Andrew, You’ve made a great post here, and imma let you finish, but no cameras at work. I’m gonna have to confiscate that pic of my feet up on the desk :)

On a more grown up note, I’ve seen a lot of this in the past year with the downturn. Hopefully, as things pick back up, these attitudes will begin to swing in the other direction.
