Today, I uploaded a new photo to my Twitter account.
It’s the third (fourth?) that I’ve used since I started on Twitter earlier this year. Each time I’ve been happier with the photo that I’m using.
The easiest thing to do might have been to go out at the beginning and get a professional head shot taken. But with all I’ve been doing to build this website, support my clients, and in other areas of my life, a photo was lower on my priority list.
You may run up against the very same concept with your job search and career development. There’s something that you know will make you more successful, more competitive, more marketable — but it just hasn’t cracked your top 10 priorities yet.
We’d love to be top notch at everything, all the time, but if you’re waiting for perfection, you may end up stuck in “poor” when “good” or “halfway decent” would be a big advantage.
If you have an area of your life that you’re waiting to tackle with a big effort when you’ve got all the details figured out, ask yourself if there’s some way to take step 1, 2 or 3 today. The first step towards excellence is the most important.
