Last week, I wrapped up my holiday shopping, took care of some outstanding year-end items, and lightened my workload a bit. I was able to go into yesterday’s pot luck with friends a little more relaxed, and fully enjoy my egg nog latte (Thanks, Chris!).
Not one to spend much time resting, however, my mind turned forward. Next year, over another holiday latte, where do I want to be? What do I want to have achieved?
It’s natural to find ourselves at New Year’s Eve, looking back and then looking forward and wondering what’s to come.
If you’re ready to take charge of your outcomes, now is the time to start planning.
Start by looking backwards
Before you can look to 2010, it’s good to see what 2009 has brought you.
- What are you grateful for?
- What have you achieved?
- What did you hope to achieve that you fell short of?
- What obstacles did you face? How did you get past them?
- What have you learned?
These questions can apply to your career, your relationships, your personal growth — any area of your life.
The more time you spend contemplating these questions and their answers, the better understanding you’ll have of how to move forward.
Next, imagine your life one year out
Channel your latte-drinking self next year. What do you want to be able to say about your life? What would make you proud? What will you be excited about? Take some time and visualize what a successful year looks like. The crisper and more defined the picture, the easier it will be to achieve.
Document your goals
I know, you just had this great image about a successful new year, and here I am asking you to do paperwork.
Here’s the thing: if you don’t keep that image in front of you, every day, it will fade away sooner rather than later.
You can journal what you visualized, write down specific goals, or create a vision board. Any method that is comfortable for you will work, as long as you take the time to record your thoughts.
What do you want to accomplish in 2010?
(P.S. I know you can get there!)
